The Republic Day of Albania is celebrated annually on January 11 and is an important public holiday dedicated to the proclamation of Albania as a republic. This day symbolizes the country's transition to a republican form of government and the strengthening of national independence.

History of the holiday
On January 11, 1946, Albania officially became a People's Republic, after the monarchical rule of King Zog I was overthrown. This event occurred shortly after the end of World War II, when Albania, which had been under Italian and German occupation, was liberated thanks to the efforts of the national liberation movement led by communists. It was then that a new government was created under the leadership of the Communist Party, headed by Enver Hoxha, and Albania became a socialist state.

Meaning of the holiday
The Republic Day of Albania is a symbol of independence, the struggle for freedom and political change. It commemorates how a country that had endured many hardships and occupations was able to gain national sovereignty and become a republic.

Although Albania abandoned socialism in 1991 and began to build a democratic state, January 11 remains an important historical date for the country.
